government 13 October 2010
My fave thing recently was seeing a sign that said any government right now puts the N in ‘cuts’….tidy…and i really love that word well used…(choose any of the above words, clearly!)
cyndie 12 October 2010
Saw Jools Holland’s show just now and was so reminded of how something follows you around forever (whether you like it or not). Cyndi Lauper was on plugging a Blues album she’s recorded (I’m not MADLY into the Blues and will feel the brunt of many of your jibes for admitting as much) and of course (?) under HUGE sufferance, and you could just see she didn’t want it to happen, they showed a clip of her singing GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN from ages ago on some pop show – it was a Mrs Doyle moment, though I think she enjoyed it far FAR less from hers than i do from mine…
turn 11 October 2010
Well, the knitting began in earnest last night and continued into today. I got a nice turn on one of the stitches I am attempting – a cable, since you ask. I have launched my assault on a long long scarf (in a nice denim blue wool/cotton mix) the like of which are retailing for men at unbelievable prices right now – to a design of my own designing. And already I know I am short some yarn* – a few balls short of a scarf, as we may say from here on out. You have been warned. *though I know where I can get some more
all the tens 10 October 2010
it’s the 10th of the 10th of the 10th today! 10-10-10 – looks lovely to me. and yet again highlights how much i will miss my local dublin bus route (the 10!) when it is no more. At least my mum still lives in a house with the number 10 on the door. if asked i’d‘ve always thought the number 3 was a particular favourite of mine, and it is, but 10 is in the loop too, clearly. to mark the day, the laptop has finally allowed me onto the site to blog (many thanks, you cranky thing) and i am off to see about getting some wool and needles to take up knitting properly again. 10 out of 10, hopefully for all of that…
personal 8 October 2010
As many of you know I like to blame the menopause for a lot – whether that’s deserved or even possible is irrelevant to me, it’s a handy catchall for whingery. So while BOILING during the week I did wonder if this mythical/actual(?) menopause of mine was responsible or if the weather was very warm on that particular day and a pal let me know that Whoopi Goldberg refers to her menopause as her own private summer – love it and am borrowing it.
mop 6 October 2010
There are times when you have gotta wonder – for example, i saw an ad on tv that told me of a (great sounding) twisty mop and it promised an ‘EXCITING RANGE’ of colours. great BUT i gotta tell you, as far as i could see, there were 4 colours and they weren’t leaving me breathless…just sayin’…i do, however, want the mop if it does all it says, or at least more than the ad delivers (re EXCITING colours)
camphor 5 October 2010
I was passing by an unexpected ironmongers today (surely a great title for a novel? THE UNEXPECTED IRONMONGER) and i wandered in to look for an anti-moth thingy…reason is i found an unexpected moth (insert other great title here) on my white cotton towelling robe in manchester – the moths are supposed to live in the london flat so i was not best pleased. anyhow, i had the choice of a new lavender-scented moth ball or the ‘old’ camphor ones and before i could say ‘i am a fool’ i had pressed my nose up against the ‘old’ box and gone ‘oh GOD i rememeber that smell’ and realised it would be on the end of my long nose for the day…
WW1 4 October 2010
Interesting to note that Germany has just paid off it’s debt after World War 1. The Treaty covering it seemed to make sure that it would never actually be required to pay full monetary reparation because that was based on the unthinkable ie that Germany might once again be unified – but of course that happened. And Germany has paid up. Anyhow, by way of perspective, it has taken 91 years to pay off the 300 billion euro owed. Ireland is presently footing a 50 billion euro bill (and rising) for bank bailouts. That means we all owe 11,111 euro each…so far…suddenly i’m feeling rather poor again, especially for a citizen with shares in at least 2 nationalised banks and a clutch of building societies…wonder if we will ever pay our debt and, if so, will it be in my lifetime?
ten 2 October 2010
My Dublin bus route is the famous number 10. It goes from the zoo on the northside to a huge university on the southside, and wags will tell you it can often be difficult to tell the difference between the 2 institutions. It also passes by the national TV and radio station and through the city centre, so it covers a lot. And now there’s news that it’s to be terminated and replaced by the 46A and 39A – they just don’t have the same ring to them as the 10 it seems to me. Also our family home in the West was, and still is, 10 and though my present Dublin home is a number 11 that’s really only a Spinal Tap 10..as in’ this one goes to 11’. I’ll miss the 10 and even though I know we have to ‘move on’ I really don’t see what the improvement is by replacing it…the route is all but the same from what I can gather though now not as elegantly named…
another 30 September 2010
The Irish own another bank as of today, though not entirely through group choice it must be admitted. And we owe BILLIONS. So why have I got nothing to show for that? No car, no diamonds, etc…What was I doing while all of this money was being spent? Clearly not paying attention to all the lending and speculating and shopping being done ‘on my behalf’
