sheffield 28 October 2010
i’m off to sheffied tomorrow to see a man about a job, yet anyone i mention the trip to has stories of famoulsy good ‘times’ in their ealier lives in that town – it is ‘history’ and indeed historic on all levels, it seems. I have been given two venues to check out on a small theatre tour i’m going on and my mind will be filled with women i know now and the imagining of their conquests of men i have not met (and may never will)in these two places of import. BIG DAY, not to mention me hoping to walk away with a tasty gig (which is a done deal if we don;t all hate the living sight of one another…i’ll let ye know the gories on the other end ie the return to manc. in the meantime wish me luck!
celia 27 October 2010
I watched a programme on tv about ‘mad’ cat people and am veh veh broody for cats and kittens now. if you’ve got it for the felines you GOT it. Celia Hammond is clearly a goddess and she’s ‘got it’. and if i look that amazing and am doing something meaningful when i’m 70 i will be one proud human being…
lag 26 October 2010
I’ve been sleeping a LOT recently and I love it. I happened to have a long weekend off just now and it coincided with a Bank Holiday in Ireland so I scuttled home and spent a really lovely few days lolling about with Himself and eating and writing and SLEEPING. 2010 knocked me out and it was like I was making up for all sorts of stress and wakefulness. This morning the plan was that I’d get up early-ish (7) and tackle the day head on before resuming my travels. Well, that became 9.30 and now I’m faced with a dash to get all done AND am wracked by the thought that I am about to go back to the filming timezone tomorrow and am utterly unprepared for it. For example a 7am rise would have been a lie-in in filming terms…and I am more likely to have a 6am to face tomorrow…I’m not acclimatised! This could get ugly…
post-it 24 October 2010
I’m thinking there’s nothing more forlorn than a post-it that’s ‘lost its sticky’. I recently resurrected a small pad of yellow post-its that have probably been hanging around with me since the 20th century, so they should have been used or retired by now. Still, hating to waste a bit of stationery, I decided to press them into use. BUT they no longer fulfill their original function. I tried to ‘stick’ one to this laptop to remind me of an insert I intended to make in the teen novel I’m writing at the moment and it failed to adhere to the surface it was intended for. My dears, it is merely a piece of paper now. It is no longer a post-it. Its true purpose in life is nullified. It is an ex post-it. Sad…
kilkenomics 23 October 2010
Himself loves putting things together, ideas and people. What with the world being ‘in a state of chassis’ financially he thought it best to organise a top International economics festival in Kilkenny, first of its kind anyhwere we think. It’s called KILKENOMICS and it’s on in Kilkenny, Ireland, November 11 -14. What marks it out is that it involves some of the world’s greatest economic minds but also some of the top and smartest Irish comedians who will lend their curiosity to events. The season ticket is particularly good value (I’m opting for that) and there’ll even be a special ‘currency’ accepted throughout town for the weekend called the Marble (Kilkenny being known as the Marble City). Totally intriguing and not to be missed. See you all there (actually I have to do one of the interviews on the Saturday so I’ll be working at it too ). Check it all out at kilkenomics.com. See you there in November!
throat 21 October 2010
ARGH! dongle nightmares (am even dreaming about the wretched thing now) so i fear it’ll be getting the boot in favour of a new model toot sweet – yup, that ‘younger, faster, better’ scenario – it’s the end of the affair…
to be honest i’m not sure i’d‘ve had much to share with you all as i’ve been rolling around in the local woods near the Chatsworth for a bit, ‘on location’ (oh the glamure of it all) and little enough else. HOWEVER the exciting bit of that was that i was reunited in this activity with the truly wonderful Rosie Cavaliero of Jam and Jerusalem (she played Kate Bales) and she’s just bleddy brilliant. also, there was a photographer in the trees trying to be a papparazzo (i think) so as damp and dusty and cold as it was there was plenty to keep us amused while working.
and today i awoke with a bitterly sore throat and a head that had congealed overnight so any magical thoughts i might’ve had are trapped in the concrete that has formed in my brain…when all becomes more ‘fluid’ again we may have much to discuss…well, that’s the hope anyhow…and we must cling to hope in this rotten year!

wise 18 October 2010
Every so often someone comes up with an idea to raise money for charity like people nominating their favourite poem for a book, or whatever. I’ve wondered what piece of wisdom I’d pass on for such a project and as many of you know I’m a fan of advising anyone to tuck the shower curtain inside the bath and simple stuff like that. But how about the following which encapsulates so much about life and the lessons we learn –
‘KNOWLEDGE is knowing a tomato is a fruit; WISDOM is not putting it in a fruit salad.’
tiresome 17 October 2010
Feckin dongle – we’ve been here before mes amis and will be again it seems…I need to sack it off (handy phrase learned this year on SHAMELESS) – let it consider itself on a yellow card/serious warning.
In other weekend news, it’s as well I wasn’t in touch as I got sort of low again. Sometimes it’s triggered by the strangest little things, eh? For instance John Lewis have no more of the wool I need for the long scarf I was knitting – no matter really, I’ll make something else (shorter!) but it got to me. And the dongle (yet again). I suspect hormones were involved too. There was the journey back to Manchester on the pendolino which has hosted me in various states throughout the year, and many of them a tad sad – travel is not broadening my mind as much as underlining how time is flying past. And then the memories of how, shall we say, challenging 2010 has been got a hold…and on it went. Still a wallow is allowed and not too much of an indulgence in these recessionary times, surely. However, life must be wrestled back life now and an upwards trajectory planned. I let yez know how that goes…And the (very) good news is that I got the last of the red wool available that Sally Carman needs to complete her VAST scarf/throw/wrap!
cold 15 October 2010
Over the years I’ve lived and worked in many different places and environments. I’ve had times when I had too much or too little of lots of staples. Today I’m shivering at work and cannot warm up and I’ve realised all over again that I don’t mind being hungry anymore (indeed it’s no harm not to eat just for the sake of it – film/tv sets are notorious for the amount of grazing you can do) but I really never want to be cold again. I find it hard to concentrate when I am. I’ll admit right now that I love my central heating at home too and getting up in a dark but warm house makes a huge difference to the start of any winter’s day. Am presently reaching for a blankie right now…
